Hello everyone

I have a small sewing business I started with my sister and well basically it is now only me doing the business. I make clothing and  accessories, and small furniture from recycled marital, but I am not sure about marketing my business. Be live it or not my day job is social networking (= I  know this should be cake for me but I am not finding it that way at all.

So my question is if anyone here has a sewing business and if so are there any tips you may be willing to share ? My goal is to make my business my full time job, that pays all the bills and then some.

I make anything from custom dresses to hand bags and jewelry.

Thank you for reading my post

5 Easy Steps to Starting Your Own Sewing Business

I haven't read the entire article but I thought it might help some.

In terms of marketing, do you have your own web site to showcase your work?
Yes I do have a website but not much on there I need to add more product and such.

Thanks for the info on the article I will check it out
The best place to start (IMO) is at Kathleen Fasanella's Fashion Incubator site. It's full of great advice for designers and sewing entrepreneurs.

Good luck!
Thank you I will check them out.
Wow - thanks for suggesting Fashion Incubator. Incredible marketing materials - easy to find, search the archives. So glad you put the link in your response.

I am in the process of doing the same thing. I made business cards and place them on any board I see around town. Have yet to build a web site but am trying to learn how to do that. I am doing alterations now, not my favorite, but want to break into the wedding market. Try asking at your local fabric stores if they have a seamstress list you can put your name on. One I have near me has you present some of the things you have done before they add you to the list. I am working on a few things to show them. Someone suggested to me to not do to many things but try and specialize in just a few that you love to begin. you can always branch off later. My biggest problem is figuring how to price things.
Yes I have that issue to I don't want to over price and yet I don't want to under price so its a catch 22. Thanks for the info I will try that one thing I have heard is to go to the local dry cleaners and ask if they need someone to help them with there mending and you can sub work from them. I have not tried that yet but it seems to be a good solution too.
Are all your items custom or do you plan on making up an inventory to sell? If you have an inventory you might consider selling on Etsy or one of the other online marketing sites.
well everything is unique and nothing can be reproduced unless we have a large quantity of a specific marital. I have not had luck with etsy in the past.
I think one of the biggest mistakes people make is to not have a plan - so you are starting in the right place. As well has having a business plan you need to have a financial plan. And think not only about the business, but about yourself. Where do you want to be in 1 - 3 -5 - 10 years and more? Don't overspend and stick to your plan.
Best wishes with the business and God Bless, Ramona
Thank You and you are so right about the plan.
Hi Cyndi!
Who is your target customer? Are you looking to sell to the end user or wholesale (to stores/boutiques)?
