Here is an online sewing course called Sewing 101 that has 15 sections teaching everything from pins, needles, etc to lapped zippers. This is a non-credit course, and is provided for your personal enrichment. This course is not intended to be a substitute for any state, government, licensing, certification or educational requirements. Basic Course: $40.00 (no CEU Certificate) with CEU Certificate: $65.00

There is no "need" to cut a tissue pattern out, along the cut line, before you pin and cut the fabric. If you want to pin together the pieces for fitting, you will want to cut the pattern out first. If it is a pattern that is on thicker paper (example: Kwick Sew), you will want to cut it out first to prevent damaging your fabric only shears.

It's been a long time since I last sewed anything besides a button onto a shirt. My question is do I cut out my pattern after I've penned it to the material or do I cut out the pattern first and then pen it to the material. I know that is's a simple question but it has me stumped.

Hi! Would anyone know the best way to take in the waistband of a skirt? I am attempting to recycle some skirts I have "outgrown" into skirts for my 8 y.o. The sides look great, the waistband and pockets are not coming together well.
Warna Comment by Warna on September 24, 2009 at 9:11am
Katherine, I have used the tape that has the snaps already installed. This tape works great for children's clothes, maybe it would work for your application as well. The tape comes in white, black and beige - that I have seen.

Katherine, here is a video on how to sew on snaps.
http://www.monkeysee.com/play/2154-sewing-on-snaps
Maybe this will help make it easier. I have used the metal ones that require you to hammer the snaps thru the fabric. If you put them on right, they are OK. But if you make a mistake, it can be frustrating to apply. Just my opinion.
Katherine Prevallet Comment by Katherine Prevallet on September 21, 2009 at 2:01pm
I need some help or guidance concerning snaps. I have started working on a lot of projects recently that require them. I tried the plastic sew ons and found them to not be worth the $. They were so flimsy and came unsnapped too easily. The metal sew ons work well but it is VERY time intensive. I think there is hardware out there that you can buy if you are doing this a lot, but I would like to know if these plier contraptions work, which ones work the best and general advice. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!
