Fat Quarter Shop's Notion of the Month Sale

I started working on a pattern that tells me to finish the edges of each side of my seam allowance and then to press open. I understand the concept that I need to sew at the very edge of each side to prevent it from unraveling. But, what type of stitch am I supposed to use for this?

I've used a zigzag, but you need to have plenty of allowance. If not, the fabric will roll & bunch. Try using a zigzag stitch and trim off excess.
