Hello my sewing friends, I have a question for ya. I am looking for a free sewing pattern or tutorial on how to make a bomber hat or winter cap with ear flaps. I want to make some for my kids/grandkids for Xmas but haven't found anything I can understand yet. Some of the tutes are confusing. I use old clothes, fleece(if I have any) or whatever I have that's warm for winter.
I found one but I couldn't figure out how she got the ear flaps attached to the band of the hat. I'd like to have something that covers the back of the neck and comes around the face and attaches with velcro under the chin.
I hope you can help me out! I'm tired of searching for this pattern. Maybe there's someone out there in cyber space that can make me a pattern. Anyway I got my fingers crossed...lol
Thanks in advance

My daughter wants me to make doggy clothes for small dogs.I found this free pattern
http://www.hgtv.com/crafting/dog-dress-with-pattern/index.html
and have made 2 of them so far. I will post pics soon. I am also interested in any patterns you might have for little dogs that you don't want.
Simplicity has a few but way too expensive and now they are charging shipping when it was always free. Everybody's out for money these days...lol
If you have any cute patterns and don't want too much for them, just let me know.
You can find me at sewfunny1945@yahoo.com
Thanks,
Kay aka Sunshine

I'll need help soon. I'm relatively new to sewing and I'm making a coat for my husband. Its lined and has all the fun stuff I've never done before. I've always been a basic skirt or tank sewer. I'm going to need help once I start to put this together, I've never done lining and it scares me but I'm excited. Thanks for the group Susan.

Home-Sew sells a bias binding foot, as well as many other accessories. They have a website www.homesew.com. I've ordered a lot of stuff from them. Have any of you?

With regard stitching bias tape around the seam in one pass, if you use a bias binding foot it's a breeze. Teh tape feeds into the foot, folds and wraps around the seam and is then stitched in place. These are specialist feet, usually available from sewing machine shops. I know Janome and Husqvarna Viking have them. Also lots of the tapes when folded are slightly wider on one side - ie: not folded exactly in half. The wider side goes on the reverse, so it's easier to catch it when 'stitching in the ditch' from the front. Hope this helps.

Hi! I have a question. When making hats, how do you determine what kind of interfacing to use? For example, thickness, degree of stiffness? I don't want the brims to be too stiff or too limp. I hope somebody knows the answer to this. Thanks.

I like to use double sided fusible tape like Wonder Tape for holding the bias tape in place to sew it down. Very easy to use. Steam-A-Seam double sided fusible tape also works.
Athena's Grove Comment by Athena's Grove on June 20, 2009 at 7:09pm
I have 2 strategies for bias tape. The first one takes more time, and isn't good for things that are reversible. You start with stitching the narrower side of the tape onto the wrong side of your fabric/project. Then wrap the bias tape around the edge of your fabric to the right side and stitch it down. This will give you one row of visible stitches on the outside of your project.

Now, when I'm doing something reversible or have to shave time off my project, here is how I do it. I make sure that the NARROWER side of the bias tape is on the right side of my project. I usually pin, but you don't have to. Then, I stitch as close to the edge as I can. This leaves a little bit of an edge on the inside/wider part of the bias tape, but at least you have no gaps.

Hope that helps.

HI everyone! Toptsticth. I find it very tricky to catch the bottom and the top of bias binding when I do topstitch. Is there any better way of doing this to get that professional look?
