Question Sent in by: nancy rinas

"Having not used anything other than pins and basting I would like to know if theres any spray or temporary stuff to use when sewing with slippery fabric. Thanks a spoolful."

Answer:

" Temporary basting spray can be your friend. Use this notion in a very well ventilated area. It will hold the fabric where you want it while you stitch it in place. Do a search for this product here: http://bit.ly/bkRRqF

Baste the fabric in place with fusible tape. A very narrow tape may be just perfect to hold the fabric in place while it's flat on the ironing board and make it stay in place while you sew it. Be sure to keep the fusible tape in the
seam allowance. Do a search for this product here: http://bit.ly/bwOang "

something else you can do is use school glue - put a fine point adapter on it, and just draw it in the seam allowance of one side, then place the other on. The fabrics can not slip, and the glue is safely tucked away in the seam allowance. i understand you can get these fine point adapters at Joanne's in the States (still looking for them in Ottawa - going to try hobby shops, as my Michaels doesn't carry them)
Do test on a scrap of the fabric you are using if you use glue :) wash it to see if it changes the color etc...
I'm in a small town.....no Michaels etc. here.
I have to go to a town that has a Fabricland this coming week. Will see what they have. By school glue does this also mean stuff like "Elmers glue stick? my GD left same here. Thanks .
Thanks for the help, I will definitely make sure it washes
yes, school glue is that white stuff we give kids, or the glue sticks.
I use the school glue sticks. Works fine and washes out of quilting cotton. A nice fabric would require testing, tho.
Becky....I tried some of the glue stick on this particular fabric..it might work if I dont put it on too heavy and only on the outer edges of the seams, enough to help hold the pieces togeather.
Why are you considering any product other than "pins" for this temporary holding task? Do your pins snag the slippery knitted fabric or fall out? Maybe you need ball-point pins (specficially for knits) to go with the ball-point sewing machine needles you'll need with this kind of fabric. Maybe you need longer than usual pins so you can get a bigger "bite" of fabric when you are trying to hold two pieces together. Is the problem you are trying to overcome something totally different? Like maybe you think you need continuous "hold" along the seam line to overcome a sewing machine problem. For example, your needle might be pushing the fabric into the bobbin case. The cure for that could be to use a different plate (with a smaller hole) under the presser foot or get a smaller, ball-point needle for your machine. Is bottom layer of the fabric being moved (by the feed dogs) at a different speed than the top layer? Maybe you need a different kind of presser foot for use with this fabric. There are roller feet, teflon-coated feet, and "walking" feet for sewing machines which might make a world of difference for you. Could you use a serger instead of the sewing machine to do the tasks you want to do? I suspect glue isn't the right solution for whatever it is you're trying to overcome in working with this particular fabric. Would a manufacturer making 10,000 units of whatever it is turn to glues as a cost (and time) effective solution? If not, there is a better way for you to go.
HI CHERYL.......Iwanted something to help with this slippery blouse fabric other than pins etc. because i am having trouble with my hands at the moment..(arthritis) & awaiting op. for carpal tunnel and
dupertron contraction. Its making it hard to handle some sewing projects. The blouse is on hold while
I try it in a broadcloth. The bc I will use any day and the slippery is dressy. The bc one is coming along
quite well. Sort of a wearable sloper! Havent tried any of those other feet you mentioned,I shall look
into them. This old"girl" is learning a lot on this site. Thank you...
