I know how to knit and purl, cast on and off, and all the basic stuff, but I'd really like to learn how to do cable. First of all, do I need any special supplies, needles or anything? And second, HOW? I have no idea where to start. If anyone can help me I'd love it, thanks.

If you can knit and purl you are set. For cables you need a small needle to hold the stitches you are crossing over.
If you have say a four stitch cable crossing in front it will say C4F. You would put two stitches on the small needle and leave them in front of the work. Knit two stitches then slip the two from the short needle back onto the left needle and knit them. If it crosses in the back, you will see C4B. you do the same only leaving the stitches on the short needle in the back.
There has been a lot of talk about how to do cables withot the little needle. Personally I would not try it as I feel safer with the short needle.
Hope that helps.
Yes, yes, yes without the little special cable stitch holder in back or front I'd lose the stitches, surely. Safer to use the stitch holder. And it's so easy.
thanks. that's definitely helpful. wow, you made it sound so easy, now I can't wait to try!
I agree with Anne about the needles. You can buy books that have cable patterns in, perhaps you can buy one of these and have a practice, I love Aran knitting.

I want to learn to cable as well. My question is when it says C4F, do you place two stitches from the right needle on the cable or the next two "unworked" stitches from the left needle onto the cable needle? Thanks
I don't know if you got any answers but ,,,,, just in case, you don't need any special needles apart from a cable needle, which is a short needle with a point at each end.

when it says C4F, you put 2 stitches to the front of your work with the cable needle, knit the next 2 stitches from your needle, then knit the two from the cable needle.

when it says (c4F) the F indicates to the front, when it says (c4B) the B indicated to the back.
If i can help in any way please email me.
