I have mastered the basic knit stitch but cannot comprehend how to purl stitches. I like to knit prayer shawls for my church & would like to improve my knitting skills but don't have funds for lessons. Are there any tutorials that you can recommend?
I'm working on a prayer shawl too! I checked out youtube videos for purling. That way I could start and stop and re-start the video demo. There are so many out there. I jsut save them to my favorites in Youtube. Setting up an account there is really easy too.
There are 2 yarn shops but both are not convenient for me to get to & they are not handicap accessible for wheelchairs. The library & community centers in our area do not offer knitting or sewing classes. I do belong to the American Sewing Guild & can knit with church members but everyone is so busy that I hate to interrupt them to show me a technique as we only have 1 hour a week to do these. The tutorials provided are great. I'll practice the technique until I'm comfortable with it before trying it on a shawl.

Marty, even though the library doesn't have classes surely it has books? maybe even videos or DVDs? You clearly have internet access; Google is your friend. Go to the Knitty and Ravelry websites and you'll be gobsmacked just how much is out there - and may be able to find a conducive group to join that is accessible. Come to that, what about asking some of the nice ladies (and gents) from church if anyone has time to help you out apart from at the get-together? After all, it'd be a bit un-Christian of them all to say "no" wouldn't it?
