I love this idea. My first ever sewing machine was 2003, After my Mother had passed away. I had images of making so many things from her clothes that I had kept. The first thing I made with my 100.00 brother machine was a memory flag. Yep, a flag which I placed on the flag pole that was on my front pouch. It did not last the wind nor weather. I took it down once it started to fall apart. I thought to myself what am I doing, I can't sew. Here is where I needed a group such as this. IN 2005 I retired and moved to another state. I thought I would finally learn how to sew and make things with all the buttons and such that I kept of my mothers. Well, once here. I opened up the box that I kept my brother sewing machine in. And set it up. It wouldn't work. It wouldn't keep a stitch. It was broken I was sure of it. I took the booklet out read trouble shooter page and still couldn't figure out was was wrong. That year I became a member of our Local FREECYCLE SITE. I was just going to let it go to someone that could fix the darn thing and give up sewing anything. Well, one of the members actually helped me fix my sewing machine. It was the tension, And because of that I made the memory pillow that I posted here of my mothers clothes and buttons.... Things like these. or thoughts I should say. play in my head as if I can ever sew. many of those images to reality. But now that there is a group that I can go to.. Before tossing out the brother sewing machine. I'll come here for help... This is so great.

Skipping zig zags  Well I dont know your machine very well but it may be a missing tooth in a gear or timing belt. Remember to alway start small check tension, needle, fabric type all can cause skipping. Use another fabric, change needle, check tension, clean, oil and see if that fixes the problem.

Kay, Singer Touch&Sew model 626 It sounds like you need to replace the lower gears. the touch and sews are known for the plasic gears breaking from age. You can replace them it is not that hard. I have done it a few times myself. A hard lesson learned. Stay with the touch & sew 600e all metal drive. Good luck

Thank you, Carolyn! I guess I was taught that, too, (where I bought my machine and took my classes) but didn't realize that's what you meant. But thanksssss so much for sharing!! I'm sure other people will need this information, too (and it was a GREAT reminder for me!). I've learned to always ALWAYS pull my top thread out like you said, and not pull it from the top of the maching (not ever) as it does add to lint build up.

Removing thread from tension disk. At the left end of the Bernina Artista is a screw that uses the hex screw driver which came with the machine. Unscrew the plate and remove it. This gives access to the inside of the take-up lever. I am able to see the thread that is caught and gently remove it. Also, when replacing the upper thread, I cut it just beyond the spool and pull it gently out from the needle as this helps prevent lint build-up between the disks.

Carolyn, please share! I have a Bernina Artista, too, and would like to know...

I have a White Jeans machine, and my needle thread isn't connecting with my bobbin's thread. Can anyone help me or is it a job for a repair person? My reg. guy retired and I have no way to contact him. I'll have to find someone I can trust.

I have a Bernina Artista sewing machine. At a class I was taking the instructor accidentily got her thread caught in the tension disks. It was good that this happened as she showed us all how to correct this problem if it should happen to us.

I am back with sad news about this machine, she's sick! I researched and found that she has a plastic gear inside the top cover and after inspecting, I found this gear was completely gone, no teeth left:(
Now I know why it would not pick up the bobbin thread. And since I'm on a fixed income I cannot afford to take her in for repairs. So she's up for sale. Oh well, I tried and will be sad to see her go!
So before you buy a machine like this one, be sure to check under the top for the plastic gear, it may save you some money.
