I've started using my serger to 'pre-bind' my quilts - the bindings go on so much neater after the edges have been serged, and I trim the batting/backing at the same time!

I have 2 sergers, White Superlock 2000 ATS and a Brother 1034.  I would like to put them to a lot more use. I understand you can make wuilts with you serger.

I have a Janome serger, and am discovering the wonderful possibilities of things I can make with it. When I bought it, I thought I would use it to only finish my seams. I am using it to make complete garments, and it's so much easier! I wore a new blouse (bought at the mall) with a pair of solid red crepe clam diggers I made. My mom commented on them, and I showed her that I have started using my serger to almost completely make a garment. I used to sew the seams, and then I would zig zag them. I thought it made them look neater, plus, it cut down on raveling. Now, I just use my serger and it does it all at one time. I look forward to finding out more things that I can do with my serger. I think there are some books available that have projects that are sewn with sergers. Happy serging!

All in all, Wren is right. If basic seam finishing is all that is needed from a serger the added bells and whistles are not necessary, but there is a whole wonderful world of serging projects out there though...Wren is on the money when she advised test driving several models. Not only will it help settle on the right machine, it will help eliminate any fear of the machine once you have it. Mine was in the box for months after I bought it, because it intimidated me.

I've only owned one serger - my old Toyota, just a plain workhorse of a machine with no differential feed & manual threading & change for rolled hem, but as long as you are patient, threading isn't hard at all & it does a great job. If you're just serging seams, I imagine most sergers will do that just fine. If you think you stand a chance of doing more, you might want to buy a higher end one, but I've had this one for YEARS & I still love it. Mostly, you should just go to the stores & test drive them to see which you are the most comfortable with. jmho, too.

I'd start with the most quality machine you can afford. My first serger just made me want a better serger. jmho

Hi I am new here and I want to buy a serger for seams . I make prequilted handbags and want to have nicely finished inside seams. I am presently just zigzaging with my sewing machine.
What should I get for starte serger?.

Wow, we all seem to have much the same problems. Two books I have that I like are, "Sewing with Sergers" by Gail Brown, Pati Palmer and the
other is "ABCs of Serging" by Tammy Young & Lori Bottom. I find I can do lots with my old Janome Mylock and dont have too much trouble but I just use my Huskylock 936 for the cover stitch only because I find it
too much trouble changing it.

Hi Whisperingdragon - I've owned a Singer serger since 1983. I have serged miles on it and loved it to pieces - literally. It makes the best rolled hem and I still use it for that purpose. The rest of it has more or less retired. May I make a suggestion? If you decide to get one, go to a reliable Singer dealer and test drive as many different versions of it as you can. I think you'll find that each machine has it's own little characteristics.

Thea that is a great idea, never thought of that. Yes Jodjean I wanted a very narrow thread.

This video demonstrates how to fix / adjust / repair the timing of the hook on a sewing machine. If the thread from your needle isn't getting caught by the hook that rotates around, this video explains what to adjust to fix that. Requires some very basic tools and takes 15-30 minutes - maybe less.
