I love to sew for Children. Just a few years ago I discovered all the many Independent Designers that create patterns for Children. I had no idea there was anything other than the usual patterns you find at most fabric stores. McCall's , Simplicity, Vogue etc. The Independant Designer Patterns seem to be more stylish and easier to sew. I live in Kansas City. You would think in a large city there would be many great stores for quality fabric and these great patterns. Wrong....!!! Out of my frustration came my idea for my own online Fabric and Pattern store. I carry only quality Fabrics and Independent Designer patterns, such as "Pink Fig", "Oliver +S" , "Sew Baby", "The Childrens Corner",The Apron Lady", "Jackie Clark", "Sew Sensible" , "The Handmade Dress", " Ma-Bell ' the list goes on-and-on. These patterns are a little more expensive than the usual patterns you can get on sale. However, they are multisized and usually have many variations. You will find yourself using them Over and Over again.
I'm a beginner at sewing clothes, and I started with the Sew Easy brand that I get at WalMart for around $3. It wasn't that easy for me, and I needed some help.
Other then that I love the patterns from "You Can Make This" shop.
Oh my goodness! So many good sources!
I have used the usual patterns from the big four companies in the past but have since found the internet to be a wonderful source for finding others. Patterns I use now are:
1. Farbenmix
2. Abacadabra
3. BizzKids magazine with pattern inserts & now available in english
4. Studio Tantrum
5. Oliver + S
6. Portabellopixie
7. Pink Fig
8. ModKid (new favorite)
9. Mamu Design
10. Izzy & Ivy
11. Maja Heirlooms (found at a sewing Expo)
I just read through this topic, and I didn't see Kwik Sew mentioned (unless I missed it). I am an Ottobre subscriber, and have several back issues as well. I have yet to sew anything from either a children's issue or a women's issue. I do like the designs, and I have many on my to sew list. I really like Kwik Sew Sewing for Toddlers Book as well as some of their individual patterns. I've found that Kwik Sew and Ottobre offer more patterns for boys than many of the other brands, and I'm sewing for my son. I've also read good reviews on the other Kwik Sew books (Sewing for Babies, Sewing for Children, etc.).
