Hi Colleen, I,too love hand quilting and I'm doing some free motion quilts. (It's a lot faster).The only way to do it is just jump in and go at it. Ha.I use the darning foot,lower the feed dogs, set the tension as low as it will go, set the stitces at 2.o and .08.. I,also, own a sewing /embroidery machine and I enjoy embroidery.(Hand and Machine).I belong to the Beauregard Parish Council on Aging and we piece quilt tops,have them quilted and donate them to the Dialysis Unit for the patients. It is very rewarding.Have a nice day.
