I just joined and am hoping to find others who re-create dresses and other items from the Victorian period. I make dresses from the hoop and bustle era and although I do some custom sewing for others, I mostly create dresses for myself which I wear as a docent at living histories and historic sites in Texas and New Mexico.
I have done a lot of research and have been fortunate to live close to an antique shop that specializes in antique garments. I received permission from the owner to photograph one of his displays and I put it on the web so others can enjoy it and use it for research. You can see it at http://www.geocities.com/adixon2003/period_dresses/
Thank you for letting me join. I look forward to the discussions of this group. Ann

Great photos! This is an antique store? It looks like a museum!
Do you also have pics of your own creations? I'm sure we'd all love to see those as well.
I make a lot of stuff, I've done Rennassaince Faire wear, bridal, mascot, colorguard, drum corps, Halloween, and high school theater costumes.
The one I haven't the guts or skill to tackle yet, is Sci-Fi fantasy wear. It looks awesome and difficult.
Susan, I know a few people in Abilene, TX who are trying to start up a Sci-Fi group there and the costumes they were going to fashion theirs from seem to be very easy to assemble. I would be intested in viewing some pics if you run across some.
I love this period, I collect antique clothing for study, and re-create to wear. I love accessories also, hats etc.
Glad I found this group.

Those dresses are beautiful!!
Ann, fancy meeting you here. We share a common friend Sandra and was introduced to you last year. I have since moved to Louisiana and have not picked up the sewing but still lovecostuming. I ran across your card the other day and wondered how you were doing. I have also recently joined and am curious as to where sewing trends might be here. I loved the pics and some of them look familiar. I also love the Victorian Era but have not done any sewing for that era. It's good to see someone online that I actually have met. Good sewing!

Help!. I was wondering if any of you ladies know how to make a frock coat or cutaway coat out of a suit coat and matching pants.. or even out of a trench coat?  my husband is a drama teacher and doing Miracle Worker.  I have all the ladies accounted for but we just dont have the money to rent frock coats!  (you know education budgets are a mess in california)

I can go to a thrift store and buy a suit.. no problem.. but buying a frock coat.. is just not something we can do.  thanks so much for your help!! Bev

Hi, Beverly, I don't usually tackle men's clothing but here are a few suggestions for what they are worth.; )

You might look at the websites above, many menof the time period , especially the young and stylish wore "sack coat" jacket suits which are similar to today's quality, longer wool suits.  You could face the label with velvet or satin.  Find a vest to go with it or make one out of a brocade to add a little sparkle.

This picture might help you turn a good wool overcoat into a long frockcoat.  Also, it you have the time and it would be easier to start from scratch one of the major pattern companies have a military frockcoat from that era.  Since this for theatre, it you look for something that gives the impression of quality in a wool sack coat suit with a vest I think it would work.  Look through the Internet at Turn of the Century clothing and see if you can find something that you could work with.  There is an excellent theatre book called " The cut of men's clothes" if you can find it or afford it that might give you more ideas.  Also have you checked with your local theatre group and see if they have something they would lend.  Let us know how you solve this, it will help the rest of us, too.  Good luck.  Ann
