Permalink Reply by Beverly on February 7, 2011 at 9:40am Help!. I was wondering if any of you ladies know how to make a frock coat or cutaway coat out of a suit coat and matching pants.. or even out of a trench coat? my husband is a drama teacher and doing Miracle Worker. I have all the ladies accounted for but we just dont have the money to rent frock coats! (you know education budgets are a mess in california)
I can go to a thrift store and buy a suit.. no problem.. but buying a frock coat.. is just not something we can do. thanks so much for your help!! Bev

Hi, Beverly, I don't usually tackle men's clothing but here are a few suggestions for what they are worth.; )
You might look at the websites above, many menof the time period , especially the young and stylish wore "sack coat" jacket suits which are similar to today's quality, longer wool suits. You could face the label with velvet or satin. Find a vest to go with it or make one out of a brocade to add a little sparkle.
This picture might help you turn a good wool overcoat into a long frockcoat. Also, it you have the time and it would be easier to start from scratch one of the major pattern companies have a military frockcoat from that era. Since this for theatre, it you look for something that gives the impression of quality in a wool sack coat suit with a vest I think it would work. Look through the Internet at Turn of the Century clothing and see if you can find something that you could work with. There is an excellent theatre book called " The cut of men's clothes" if you can find it or afford it that might give you more ideas. Also have you checked with your local theatre group and see if they have something they would lend. Let us know how you solve this, it will help the rest of us, too. Good luck. Ann
