Making paper-pieced pattern for quilt?

"Has anyone made paper-pieced patterns for quilts? Or found any helpful books, etc? I'm interested in patterns of "things" rather than geometric shapes - animals, especially. I make baby quilts for my son's closest friends when they have a new child. I've done a bunch with applique animals and thought I would try this.

do you own Electric Quilt? or some other software? Electric quilt has ways to draw your own designs, import photos for tracing and then you can print out paper piece or rotary cutting instructions for any block whether your own from thousands that come with the software.

To draw your own is possible but time consuming depending on the animal or shapes you are working with. You just have to divide them up into sections, but it gets difficult with curves and causes you to make many small pieces to achieve the look of a curve.

I know this may not make sense, and I will see if I can find something in the internet that might be more helpful.

The software would be the easiest option.
