I managed to get some silk/rayon velvet (purple for those who care....) it's not very plush, more like a thick velveteen, but it is 'slinky'...I'd like to make a quilted jacket for my sister (who's a purple freak)...do I quilt quilt it on my long arm ? ( BEFORE I cut it out... ? ), or cut it out and quilt the pieces ? I'm gonna do some (machine) embroidery too.

Thanks for all your imput !

I have traced my pieces on the fabric, quilted them and then cut them out, but on the fabric you're describing that might be difficult. You might want to quilt the fabric and then cut your pieces out. For machine embroidery, I would not cut the pieces out until after the embroidery is done.

I agree with Megin. Do the quilting and embroidery first then cut out pieces. If you do that after you pieces may shrink and be too small to use. Both quilting and embroidery can shrink up the fabric. I would also use some kind of stabilizer on the fabric too when stitching on it to prevent some of the shrinking or slipping around while you stitch.

If you have enough fabric do a test sample to see how it handles the stitching and hooping. Most fabrics with a pile don't hoop well. The hoop can crush the pile and leave hoop marks.

I am no expert as I just recently purchased an embroidery machine and that was something that was covered in one of our "new machine" classes.

Thanks..I've been machine embroidering for about 8-9 yrs now. I know about that...but I'm new to longarm quilting. (got it in Feb this yr.) I've done machine quilting on my regular sewing machines (free hand, stitch-in-the-ditch stuff.) for about 7-8 yrs.
I just hate talking myself into or out of something, when I know theres someone out in wwwland thats done it all and can tell me....
Thanks ladies !!!
