Sew, What's New?

Curating sewing and quilting talent, techniques, and tutorials, since 1997.

A firend of mine was having a baby and I wanted to sew up a few burp rags, then I thought of making this changing pad with wipe & diaper pocket on my way home from work one afternoon. I thought it was brilliant and would have loved to have had one when my kids were babies. Those public restroom changing tables always grossed me out. Turns out it was already all the rage on Etsy which goes to prove that there's nothing new under the sun!
I used flannel and embroidered the words by hand based on a funky font I found online. I printed the font out and penciled it on the fabric. I made a few of these then got bored with them - after buying a lot of fabric : )

I do actually but it's packed away at the moment. I craeted the pattern so you can certainly wing it! I think it's something like 15" wide by 26 or 28 inches long once it's sewn.

You sew it with wrong sides facing, then and turn it right side out. Then sew around the entire thing, about 1/2" seam allowance. That keeps it from shifting in the wash. Then fold one of the small ends up to form a wipe pocket at one end. Sew it down on the outside edge you just sewed. Attache ties or whatever sort of fastener you want. If you embroider it, just make sure to do it before you sew the pieces together. Whenever I do embroidery letters, I look for a font I like & print it out in the size I want and pencil it on the fabric using the printed letters as a guide.
