Here comes Peter Cottontail

I downloaded the free pattern from The Polka Dot Umpbrella's blog for this darling bunny soft toy. I did tweek the pattern instructions slightly but all in all it is fairly the same. Details on my blog http://thimblesbobbinspaperandink.blogspot.com/2011/04/peter-cottontail-hopping-down-bunny.html

I made this bunny as well using an old Hawaiian shirt.  I worked around the problems with attaching the legs. One,I would recommend tapering the seam allowance on the legs from the 1/2
inch seam at the toes( to allow for the bottom circle to fit right) to a
3/8 at the thigh. Much easier to stuff. Two, I made sure to push the stuffing in tight before attaching and then working it back to the leg once it was sewn. Lastly, I did add the "optional" base and instead of attaching it to the back piece as stated in the instructions I accidentally attached it to the legs first...to my delight it made it much easier to work around sewing the legs on as well as left me a good spot to leave open for flipping and stuffing.

What a cute bunny!  And just in time for Easter.  Thanks for the tips- good to know.

Wow that pic posted huge.  I agree with you on the legs and perhaps I over stuffed them just a bit as well.  Because I used quilting flannel, I didn't need to put anything in the ears for sure.  My machine really would have struggled!  I thought it was funny that we were working on this project at the same time yesterday and having the same issues.  Small world for sure.

I enjoyed your blog page very much.  We sound like twins.  I too have 3 adult children and this bunny is for my granddaughter.  I sew, crochet, garden, work with dogs and horses, plus I LOVE scrapbooking and am in the process of making an album for my son's wedding.  Rather than a slide show presentation of their lives coming together, I offered to put it in a 12x12 keepsake album complete with some blank pages for wedding photos.

Thank you for your comments,  I'm going to try this again with broadcloth or denim, something sturdy but not as heavy as the flannel.

Beth, I too had a heck of a time with sewing around the legs as well as arms.  I did use my zipper foot and that helped a lot but still was difficult without some "oops" moments.

The legs pattern also presented some stuffing problems.  She said to use a 1/2" seam allowance for the legs but I really questioned why.  All of the rest of the seams are 1/4" and 3/8".  With a 1/2" seam on the legs it virtually left about 1/2" in which to stuff the fiberfill.  VERY difficult to do!

I also didn't feel that the bottom piece should be labeled as optional.  It was difficult enough to sew the legs with the additional piece, but without it I can't begin to imagine how hard it would be.

I didn't care for the thinness of merely two layers of cotton fabric for the ears.  I didn't want them to be stuffed but they definitely need some type of support.  I used a thin layer of flat quilt batting.  I think it made the ears fall better and not quite as limp.

These are just a couple of tweeks I made.  It is definitely a keeper of a pattern and the bunny is adorable, but I think construction instructions and techniques might be better and more simple.

Have you posted yours, Beth?  I would love to see it.

Jennifer, I made this pattern too but had a devil of a time working around the legs when I was putting the back onto the front.  The machine kept trying to skirt the legs leaving them unattached.  And the flannel I was using began to fray really complicating my efforts.  I ended up doing some hand sewing to tidy up an arm and one leg.  I thought about using my zipper foot placed on the outside edge.  Do you have any tips or tricks that helped you?  Thanks!  Loved how my bunny turned out tho.  Now that I've done one, I'll do several.
