Thanks for describing the cool tip Cheryl!! I guess it'd be even easier if you use the cording foot for the 'string' inside the zigzag... Love you guys.. totally!! Thanks again!!

For the "gathering-challenged", here's the easiest tip ever: Stitch with a zig-zag over a piece of string (or dental floss or button thread or crochet cotton). Don't change your tensions -- it isn't necessary. Just be sure your zigzag stitch doesn't "zig" closer than 1/8" INSIDE the seam allowance and that it doesn't pierce the string either. That way, when you sew the seam, the zigzag won't be visible from the right side of the garment and the "string" will be able to move freely inside the zigzag stitching. Once you've tacked down the "string", you can gather the garment piece simply by sliding the fabric into position on the "string". For small pieces of gathering, you can use a lighter weight "string"; for long ones, use a heavier string. You can also break a L-O-N-G stretch of gathering into smaller sections and use separate "strings" for each section. When you're done with the seaming, pull the "string" out. VoIla!! All the bulk is eliminated!

Not sure what machine you have I have heard people complaining about getting it back to normal. I have mine on Auto...lol but adjust mine all the time. Usually between 0-2....but I know every machine is different. DON'T be scared of your machine. ;)

It IS a lovely dress; I would love to make one like this for my daughter! And THANK YOU for the ruffling tip; I, too, avoid gathers because I can't stand making them - they are never evenly spread out. This would make it so simple - BUT I am concerned any time I adjust the tension - do you ever have problems getting it back to "normal" after kicking it out so far? This would be a hesitation for me in using this trick. Thanks!
