If you can knit and purl you are set. For cables you need a small needle to hold the stitches you are crossing over. If you have say a four stitch cable crossing in front it will say C4F. You would put two stitches on the small needle and leave them…

i didnt learn sewing in school, just from watching my mother as a small child and then again recently while doing work experience in a sewing factory.
