The Skirt that was a Shirt

Posted on June 9, 2010 at 7:30pm 8 Comments

This was once a size 12/14 dress shirt that was hiding out in the recesses or our son's closet...just begging to become a skirt for my 11 year old daughter. I'm in a skirty mood now for some reason, so this project was extra fun. The best part about this one is that it has raw edges exposed which is cool looking and requires no serging or…

Confessions of a Zipper Virgin

Posted on June 3, 2010 at 9:30am 6 Comments

*cringe* Ok...so I've never installed a zipper - there, I admitted it, along with all my other sewing shortcomings in previous posts. Not only have I neglected installing a zipper, I've avoided it like the plague. I keep old zippers I've cut out of a variety of discarded clothes, in a jar for looks in hopes that I'll… Continue

Profile Information

About Me:
My "loves"...
God/Yeshua, the Lover of my soul, my fabulous husband, my precious kids, my country, crafts of all sorts including sewing (of course), knitting, beading etc...I also love baking and making Windows Movie Maker Videos of our guinea pigs. You can check them out on Youtube @ http://www.youtube.com/user/CaviesToday
What type of sewing do you enjoy?
garment
What type(s) of sewing machine(s) do you have?
An early 90's Kenmore "somethin'-er-other"

I didn't see any category for the type of sewing I enjoy so I'll just add that here! I like many sewing projects, but my favorite by far is making softies/plushies. I also like making market bags, baby items, Guinea pig beds & other pet items, T-shirt appliques etc...
What brands of patterns have you tried?
My own. I always do best when using my own ideas. Sometimes I have trouble with patterns for some reason. Using them normally leads to frustration!

Yes, She's famous! I mean I haven't personally seen one (likely because I'm in India ...lol), but she's the only cancer doll I've seen on the internet and I wasn't really looking for dolls... I am in a Yahoo Sewing group which is pretty big - almost about 5K members... And they all know Hope. The owner sews for charity. Every time someone posts any doll they comment something that she's not as cute as the chemo-doll/Hope and all.... I remember asking about her once and was pointed to your ProjectHope site. So she's the same doll I'm talking about :P and almost 5000 women I know of know about her...

You're such a brilliant doll maker! Wish you the best

Its such a sweet movement you've started with Hope... I hope it reaches more and more people

Birdie, that was after 20 years in NYC and I forgot that Field Mouse like to come in for the Winter! I think my pattern was McCall's from the 50's.

Three cheers for Birdie and her personal pattern; she's a real gem!!

I am so late replying to your comment on the fabric flowers I made. Thank you so much. You know, I haven't washed those pretties yet ;-0 I'm thinking scotch guard.........because I have them hot glued to a felt circle base. You could sew the petals to the base and wash away. I posted some quick instructions. Let me know if you have any questions. By the way, I am looking forward to seeing your Raggedy Ann dolls;-)

Hey Marti - thanks for the stabilizer tip. I have since vowed to faithfully use stabilizer anytime I try to do an applique in the future! My problem is I charge full speed ahead with an idea without fully researching the best way to approach it LOL…

Hi Sharon. About the monkey's arms, If I remember correctly, I folded the fabric under and sewed them onto the body, up close to the neck area then I used cross stitch thread from one arm to the other, through the body and pulled it tightly .…

Thanks for the kind words about my little scottie sock dog. He was really easy to make! All you need is a air of fuzzy socks (better get them now because they're only available in cold months). The toe portion becomes the bottom, the heel…

Did you use a stablizer on the letters?  I stabilized the fabric before appliquing.  Maybe that would help.  It does seem to keep it from pulling.
