Just starting...where do I learn how to sew?

I have done basic sewing over the last few years, but patterns seem so difficult. I can do straight stitching like pillowcases, etc. But I really want to try my hand at making my daughter a dress. A very SIMPLE dress and she's only 1.5yrs old, but how do I know which fabrics to buy, what supplies I need, etc. I am not very patient so I tend to just take an old dress of hers and just lay it out and copy it and sew up the seams, but I'd like to learn how to do a real quality sewing job for her.…See More

Hi Erica, classes would be a good start. Check with your local recreation dept., school system adult education dept., or if nothing is available there some fabrc stores and sewing machine dealers offer classes in their stores.

Also Simplicity has a line of "Sewing Patterns for Dummies". You may find something there that doesn't need zippers.Simpliucity 4206 is a Peasant style top that could be made longer for a dress. It has an elastic casing at the neck but that is very easy and theinstructions are very clear. Some of the "Easy" patterns just have a button and loop closure and that is simple as well.
