"Thea, thanks for the pointers on my dress! I have done quite a bit of sewing, but never tried the sheet on the table when cutting. That is a GREAT idea. I haven't purchased my fabric yet. Unfortunately, there aren't many fabric stores…"

"Hi MS - have you bought the fabric yet? it will need to be very soft and have a LOT of 'drape' for this dress to work - and I'd suggest: 1- covering your work area with a sheet - it will help keep the fabric from sliding off the…"

"Thank you for the suggestions...very clever to baste the pattern to the fabric...I'll consider that. I posted a little more on the other thread I started, too, if you are interested in following."

"Thanks for the pointers! I LOVE this pattern and am happy to have an occasion to make it for myself. I haven't looked over the instructions too thoroughly, but it is lined, which will also be silk, and it calls for a close-fitting foundation…"

"What a beautiful dress! I have not made this dress, but I have worked with chiffon. Since it is slippery, placing tissue paper under the fabric before cutting ( pinning as nec) keeps the fabric from shifting. You can also sew the seams with the…"

Profile Information

I am an awesome:
I come from many generations of Italian seamstresses. The seamstresses before me have been INCREDIBLY talented, and although I do pretty well, I am not of their caliber. I am happy, though, that I am carrying on the tradition, as I am the only one in this generation that has learned and loves the trade. In the past I have been an avid seamstress and have put many, many hours into garment construction, alterations and pattern design. I have been on hiatus for a little while, but I am getting ready to do some sewing for my wedding next summer. I also love making dolls, which I do entirely by hand. They are fun and relaxing and make me happy. :)
My sewing interests are:
garment
My sewing machine(s):
Viking
I am interested in patterns such as:
Vogue is my favorite. I also like Butterick and McCall's.

Hi again,
if you are going to the Bay Area to shop for silks, see if Stone Mountain Daughter is still in business - in Berkeley, I think, and there used to be a shop a few blocks off campus that sold the most beautiful sari silks - don't know if they are still around either, I moved away in '97 - still miss the great fabric stores in the Bay Area.
I'm living in the Pittsburgh area now, and the selection here is limited mostly to Jo-Ann selections, which if you want something special, you have to special order it, so you can't just drape it around yourself and look in a mirror before you buy it.
I'm really looking forward to seeing your pics of the dress you're making - I have a bag of silk remnants and ties that I want to make into a quilt, so maybe we can spur each other on with our silk projects.
