I have an old Brother Charger that works like a charm. I wouldn't ever buy one of those new machines just too much to break down on them and then very expensive to fix. A lot of fine sewing was done on these old machines.

I wish I had a automatic buttonhole setting, you made the manual look easy but for some reason I have messed up more button hole than I care to admit. Practice, Practice.

This video demonstra
This video demonstrates how to fix / adjust / repair the timing of the hook on a sewing machine. If the thread from your needle isn't getting caught by the hook that rotates around, this video explains what to adjust to fix that. Requires some very basic tools and takes 15-30 minutes - maybe less.
