I was featured on the Sew Beautiful Magazine Blog...

http://sewbeautifulmag.blogspot.com/2010/06/two-summer-projects-from-shirley.html

I have subscribed to SB Magazine for many years. I was so excited that they featured me on their blog post. I made the bikini swimsuit from SB issue #130. It is made with pink seersucker and trimmed in lime green rick rack.

The beach dress pattern came from issue #119. It is Erin's Easy Sew…

new sewing machine???

I am considering getting a new sewing machine. I only have 8....don't you think I need another? LOL. Anyway, I bought my Bernina on eBay, took it to the Bernina dealer and had it serviced. Also bought my Janome online, and it was new, so I didn't have to have it serviced right away. I sewed a LOT on it. Took it to the Bernina dealer, and had it serviced, (oiled, all that good stuff). I have my Janome serger, which I am not yet ready to part with it. I also have my Elna embroidery… Continue

Discovery and Evolution of Silk Fabrics

Silk fabric is one of the most common and known fiber on which textile industry is primarily dependent. It is natural protein fiber, some forms of which can be woven into textiles. Silk fabric is such a fabric which is made from threads and it is spun by the silk caterpillars. Silk caterpillars live on some specific tress and eat their leaves to live. These tresses are cultivated in order to cultivate these worms. Mulberry silk worm is one of them and most famous among them because mulberry…

First sewing room!

I'm so excited. I have been working on setting up my sewing room for the past week and it is about done. The only problem is the room that I made it in is a darker blue. It was this color before I decided on that room. I am thinking of changing it to a mint/light green. I am new to sewing and by reading up I see it should be lighter in color to help with the light. My mother was getting rid of 3 book shelves so I inhereted those. I went to goodwill and found a decnet desk for $7.99!!! I ordered… Continue

Mixed Feelings.... Do I love or hate knit fabric?

I have been working with jersey knits lately. Although I love the look and feel of quality jersey fabrics I have not decided if I like sewing them.
Question what are your tricks to working with jersey? Do you have a love hate relationship with knit fabrics?
My biggest dilema right now is with using twin needles on knits. I keep getting skipped stitches. Is it a tension thing in the bobbin?

Eco-Friendly Fabrics - Fashion School Experts Examine the Pros and Cons of the Top Green Fabrics

It wasn't long ago that clothing made with eco-friendly fabrics brought up images of treehuggers in burlap. But with ever-growing demand for clothing made from sustainable fabrics, more top designers are embracing the environmental trend. So which fabrics are truly eco-friendly? So many manufacturers are jumping on the bandwagon, we've asked a panel of fashion school experts to guide us through the choices. The fact is, even if a garment is marketed as eco-friendly, the label doesn't… Continue

Outdoor Fabrics Make Summer Living Easy

When it's warm and you want to be outside, you want your outdoor living made easy. Outdoor fabrics have vastly improved our lifestyle because they are very durable and easy to clean. However, there are some fabrics that are more durable then others, and I have often wondered why. I spoke with an expert, Garret H. Smith, VP of Operations at the Robert Allen Group.…

"Tee" Time, Anyone????

I have just finished reading all of the comments about the shirts I have made and the bags. I am simply overwhelmed! Thanks to everyone! I was skeptical to begin with about this venture into tee shirt land.... But, I started out digging through my son's closet and finding the Old Navy tee that he just wouldn't wear, or didn't like....you know how picky they are???!!!! Anyway, after that one, I used another one of his that he didn't wear. Then, I decided I wanted to go to the…

The Skirt that was a Shirt

This was once a size 12/14 dress shirt that was hiding out in the recesses or our son's closet...just begging to become a skirt for my 11 year old daughter. I'm in a skirty mood now for some reason, so this project was extra fun. The best part about this one is that it has raw edges exposed which is cool looking and requires no serging or…

Monkey Shines Quilt

Just finished this quilt for my first grandchild, due any time now. We're all anxiously awaiting his arrival. My daughter picked monkeys for the nursery theme and I took it from there. I just love the little monkeys in the center of each star. I call it Monkey Shines, hope it becomes his favorite.…

Response to Patricia about organ

You are so thoughtful to inquire about the new Lowry Organ! It is fantastic, complete with bells and whistles! (Had to have bells because I am a handbell soloist in churches!) I have to admit, the sewing machine has been a lot more quite lately, but things will even out again!! Thanks for asking!

Is a Home-Based Sewing Business For You?

By Linnea Rein

In the many years of sewing I have concluded the most pronounced characteristic for a successful home-based sewing business is a genuine love for sewing. Perhaps it goes beyond an interest in sewing. It cannot be an on again, off again feeling. It must be a powerful influence in your life that allows you to use and develop your sewing skills.

Below are some essential characteristics that I…

I'm turning green I think!!!!!!!

I have watched many of the tutes on you tube about reinventing tee shirts. I LOVE some of the ideas! Super cute! So, I ran to a "kinda local" thrift store and took my time going through the ones for teens, women, and men. I found some that are pretty cool! I found one that has the "Queen" logo (the singing group), several with destination names like Jamaica, California, etc., then one with "Switchfoot" (the singing group), etc! I'm super excited. Got an armload of shirts, and all were half off!… Continue

Confessions of a Zipper Virgin

*cringe* Ok...so I've never installed a zipper - there, I admitted it, along with all my other sewing shortcomings in previous posts. Not only have I neglected installing a zipper, I've avoided it like the plague. I keep old zippers I've cut out of a variety of discarded clothes, in a jar for looks in hopes that I'll… Continue

I want my day back !!!!!!!!

HI all,

SO you wont believe what kind of a day I had. I can assure you it wasn't productive in any way. I went about my usual daily routine for the beginning. I got my oldest off to school, made a pot of coffee and then things got weird. You see, this is where I usually would do some things of mine that I cannot do while the other kids are up, HOWEVER my 3 year old got up when I did ( which never happens) and then my 9 month old got up and my 5 year old ( again this never…
