An Introduction to Shirt Fabrics

Shirt fabrics or "Shirtings", as they are called by those in the industry, come in a wide variety of weave types. They are made from a range of fibers, with cotton being the most common. Most fabric names refer to the particular method in which it underlying fibers were woven. We won't go into it here, but be aware that the thickness and characteristics of the… Continue

Apron Fabric, Anyone?

I grabbed these out of the remnant bin and thought it was an all-red Christmas fabric. Turns out, it's an apron panel. I have two panels. I have all my gifts planned for this year, and hate to think they're going to sit in my stash another year. As my Christmas gift to my SWN friends, I'm offering these up to the first two responders. Leave a comment, and I'll send you a PM (private message) to make arrangements to mail them to you. Merry Christmas!…

Fabric luggage tags

Handmade luggage tags will make it easy for your traveling brother to locate his bags.

Have a brother who can’t sit still? Whose passport looks like a superfan’s autograph book? Give him a gift to suit his passion and his personality— and, in the process, reuse materials you might otherwise toss — by making an eye-catching fabric luggage tag for his beat-up old duffle. He’ll travel in style, and you’ll enjoy giving a handmade gift that is… Continue

November 22, 2009

Here now.... haven't been for quite sometime!
School started again back in March, graduation is next month, and I sure do miss sewing! I've not made anything in quite awhile, have some ideas in my head, but nothing definite yet.
I want to start coming back around more. And intend to try...

Wanted: forehead, never worn

Remember that "short story" by Hemingway, "For sale: Baby shoes never worn."?? What a hoot...anyway, if somebody's selling an unused monkey forehead, I'm in the buying business.

*sigh*

OK, OK! It's too late for him... I know. He's just short headed and he'll have to learn to love himself, that's all. It's not his fault that I created his pattern without a forehead. I'm not sure anyone else will accept him, but when it's a free toy, people really shouldn't really be… Continue

Embroidery Machines...What to Know Before Purchasing

So I had to take my husband around town yesterday to run some errands. While he was in the hardware store, I decided to take a moment and look for some flannel fabric at one of the local sewing shops, conveniently located in the same shopping center. :o) I didn't find any flannel, but DH finished shopping before I did and came into the sewing store. He was intrigued by the embroidery machines, and asked me if I wanted one. GASP! Are you kidding?!? Um, Yeah. I'd like one.

Never one to… Continue

Babylock Elegante II

Hi everyone,
I am running v3.2 on my machine and wondering if I can purchase the XL hoop without having to buy v4 software. It seems to me I've heard you can only use the hoop wih the latest upgrade; is that true? If so, does anyone know how much it costs.
Thanks,
Judie

Heating Pillow with Buckwheat

Sew up an easy pillow filled with buckwheat to serve as a heating pad. Buckwheat holds the heat (or cold) better than rice or other grains and is hypoallergenic, since buckwheat is not actually a cereal or grass. Add a few drops of your favorite fragrance oil, or just enjoy the smell of buckwheat. You can also use this pillow as a wrist pillow when working with your computer mouse...… Continue

The New Crewel: Embroidery for Hipsters?

I have a confession to make: I sew. I have sewn since I was a kid. For some reason, most people don’t know this about me, but it’s true.

Not only do I sew, but I actually hand sew. I do a type of embroidery called “crewel work,” which basically hasn’t been popular since the Middle Ages. The appeal for me is that it’s much more freestyle than needlepoint, or counted cross stitch, or any of that other precise, mathematical and intimidating stuff.

The trouble is,… Continue

Fall Semester 2009

Hi All,

Soon my fall semester will be over!!! Yeah (say 3 weeks) and I'll be finally making that coat for my husband. At present I'm working on a paper about human nature, Statistics and Leadership.

Wish me luck, I can't wait to be done. Each day of school seems to be dragging on.

Have a fun day sewing.
