I have an autistic step-brother-in-law who won't wear belts. Can any one tell me the easiest way to add elastic to the waist of his jeans so he wont have to? I would greatly appreciate the help. I am used to using a pattern and have never tried to do something like this without a pattern.

By the way, I am also new to the site and would like to say hello the everyone..

Thank you
Chelle

Another way to do it would be to that would be to use the back waistband as a casing instead and just thread it through.  Laura's idea is a great one; but I always have trouble holding onto elastic to stretch it when I sew it in so in Laura's idea I would open the back waistband then stitch the band closed at the bottom but leave the ends open.  Attach a safety pin to your piece of elastic and use that to thread it through.  When the end of the elastic is even with the opening where you began, stitch that either by hand or machine to hold it in place.  Then keep pushing your safety pin through the casing you made and when you get to the other end, just stitch it in place.  I would use the machine to stitch the elastic in place as it will hold it much better.  Laura's idea is probably a lot easier/better; I just make casings whenever I can with elastic as I find it very hard to hold/pull and stitch at the same time.  By the way...I am new here too!

Hi Chelle, I'm new here too.
Quick and easy way would be to add a strip of elastic enclosed in the back half of the waistband, between the side seams. Measure how much the pants need to be drawn in and subract that amount from the waistband measurement(back half only). Open the waistband seam and using a wide zig-zag stitch sew the elastic to the inside of the waistband stretching it to fit from seam to seam. Close waistband and you're done.
