Sew, What's New?

Curating sewing and quilting talent, techniques, and tutorials, since 1997.

Well, I have not been posting on here for a while.  I have been so busy.  I've been working on my kitchen re-do.  Sears gave us an estimate on SOLID SURFACE  (not the really expensive stuff) countertop for my kitchen, with a new sink.  I bout had a heart failure when they gave the estimate at almost $15,000! Then, a tile floor in my kitchen and dining room was estimated at just $10,000.  That's for a 12x12 tile that was less than $2 each.  I could not believe it! So, I told hubby that I had been watching DIY television a lot, and had watched a lot of youtube videos, and I thought he and I could do it ourselves.  He has worked for years on a 30/30 rotation in the oil field.  So, I have 30 days at a time by myself.  I am super big fan of saving money whenever and wherever I can.  I do a lot of projects here at my home to keep myself occupied.  I paint my bedrooms, make my own curtains, build flowerbeds, landscape my yard, make our vegetable gardens,....just generally take care of everything here around home when he is offshore.  I wanted the glass mosaic tile (browns, taupe, cinnamon, yellows) (hubby calls them sheets of Chicklets), purchased that at lowe's for $5 per 12x12 piece.  I got my other 4x4 pieces of backsplash for 15 CENTS each (some in burgundy, some in taupe).  I ordered my new cabinet knobs online for 99 CENTS each (antique bronze).  I kept my cabinets because I still LOVE them.  I bought my new farmhouse faucet online for $240  in antique bronze.  When hubby was home, we went together to Lowe's and picked out my granite countertop.  To tear out my old countertop, install the new granite, and for the granite itself was $3,400.  I got a new stove, a gas convection stove, for $1,000.  I chose my composite sink in brown, and it's extra deep for $249.  I have done ALL of the tile work myself, and am currently in the process of grouting the backsplash.  I think it's turning out so pretty.  I put on the new cabinet knobs.  Lowes installed the granite and the sink, and I installed the faucet and re-did the plumbing.  All of these items have added up to less than $5000.  And I have loved every minute of re-doing my kitchen.  I will post pics.  I have made several quilts and quilted them by hand, I am learning to make hairbows, though my daughter is 23.  I have started making pillowcase dresses CUTE  CUTE CUTE! I hope to get back into SWN now that things are slowing down a bit.  Happy sewing everyone!
