Didn't Get the Borrowed Machine...Got Something Better!

In celebration of our 16th wedding anniversary, my dear and sweet husband told me to forget the borrowed machine and go buy one for myself. After a long day of shopping...I am lucky to have dealers for Bernina, Viking, and Janome all in the same town...I came home really wanting a Bernina but unable to fit what I wanted into our budget. Being a little frustrated and disappointed, I prayed for some guidance. Lo and behold, I happened upon an ad (I love craigslist!) that had just been posted minutes before. Not only was the machine barely used, it was being offered below my budget! I could use the leftover cash for stablilizers and fabric! After a phone call and 5-hour round trip drive to Atlanta, I am the proud owner of a practically new Bernina Aurora 430 w/embroidery attachment. There are so many accessories: presser feet, hoops of all sizes, software, carrying cases, etc.

I plan to take classes at my local Bernina store. In the meantime, I'm devouring the manuals and workbooks that came with the machine. I plan to try the embroidery today. I'll keep you posted on how it goes. I'm sew excited!

That's awesome!  I love craigslist.  I found my 50yr.+ Kenmore on there and purchased it for a pittance, sewing table, cams, accessories..all of it!  And it's a great machine.  I am somewhat of a machine collector myself, hehe,  I got an old, old, Bernina serger from my mother-in-law that I am still trying to figure out.  But, I'm determined to get it right.  And I have a huskyloc which I bought off of Ebay - but I must be alergic to sergers or something, because I just can't quite get them to work for me.  I'm guessing that I'm not getting the threading right, that's what I hear may be the problem.  Anyway, I enjoyed your blog posts, and a very, very belated Happy Anniversary!!  Your hubby sounds like a great guy.  Congrats!

I am so glad you have such a supportive hubby :-) We have another thing in common besides loving to sew. I am a Bernina lover. I have a Bernina 930 that is 23 years old and still going strong and an Artista 640. I got my Artista "used", but with Bernina's the more they are used the better they get. I am happy that you have a Bernina.

What a thrilling opportunity you snatched for your Anniversary gift....many years of happy sewing. Life has become a bit complicated and I paused from posting here since nothing seemed to be moving. Thoughts, prayers and good medical help have come to my rescue and I am finally getting back to beading the dragonfly for my DSIL who is coming for a visit East in two weeks. She and DB are a delight and are very special to me.

This comment is a little late. I just saw this thread. Tell me, for someone who has been making quilts and doing easy sewing (not clothing) for over 30 years, on various inexpensive machines (currently a Husky which was a $200 special at a quilt show about 10 or 12 years ago), what are the merits of various machines? This is for someone who does not want to do anything fancy, nor spend a lot of time reading manuals for complicated machines. Should I stick with the simple models? And what's a fair price for same?
Thanks --

WOW Larri!!! Congratulations!!! I love Craigslist too. I have a very similar story, but with a car just last week. Sometimes u've just got to be patient. The saying, "Good things come to those who wait" is no lie.

congrats on the 430, you are going to have fun with that machine. Don't own one but I know about Bernina. You must have gotten a great deal. I am saving for my Janome6600P.
