The New Crewel: Embroidery for Hipsters?

I have a confession to make: I sew. I have sewn since I was a kid. For some reason, most people don’t know this about me, but it’s true.

Not only do I sew, but I actually hand sew. I do a type of embroidery called “crewel work,” which basically hasn’t been popular since the Middle Ages. The appeal for me is that it’s much more freestyle than needlepoint, or counted cross stitch, or any of that other precise, mathematical and intimidating stuff.

The trouble is, since crewel isn’t very popular, there aren’t nearly the amount of kits for it as there are other type of sewing. And the ones that are still around are all flowers and Victorian ladies. Not exactly my fare... continue

Believe it or not, my Brother-in-law does crewel. He has created some beautiful pieces. He learned how when he was in high school. He wanted to date a girl, and she was into crewel. He learned so they'd have something in common :o) and could spend time together. It's a beautiful art, isn't it?

I too love to crewl. Your right there is not a lot of kits out there. I remember years ago when we lived on on the Air Force academy. I attended a party that one of the military wife had in where we were shown how to do either crewl, embrodery,or puff up pictures in which you stuff cotton in to some parts of the picture to make it 3D. Cant remember the name of the party but this is where I learned to crewl. Thanks for the infomation. I know what my next project will be.

been looking all over for crewel embroidery tutorials after reading your post and found this one. To me it looks like regular embroidery, but what do I know....

Very cool! I went to her site and checked it out. I love her funky, red trees. It's all so cool! This would be really fun to create. Just what I need-something new to do *L* Great idea for gifts though. You can make small lavender sachets etc...Who doesn't like pretty things that smell good & don't take up much room??
