Tips for Adjusting Tension on Your Sewing Machine

tension tipsI think everyone has experienced a problem with sewing machine tension at some time. Finding the right tension can be quite tricky and frustrating. Tension is resistance or frictional pull on your thread as it passes through your tension guides. A certain amount of tension on the top thread, and the bobbin thread is necessary for correct machine stitching. Correct tension is dependent on the type of thread and fabric.

Here are some tips that may help you untangle your tension troubles:

For sturdy seams without puckers, your tension should be loosely balanced. The stitching should look the same on both sides of the fabric because the top and bobbin threads are connecting between layers of the fabric you are sewing.

If you have loops on the top side of your fabric:

-your top thread is too tight; loosen your top tension,

or

-your bobbin thread is too loose; tighten your bobbin tension.

If you have loops on the bottom side of your fabric:

-your top thread is too loose; tighten your top tension,

or

-your bobbin thread is too tight; loosen your bobbin tension.

If your stitching is balanced but your seams are puckering: your top and bobbin thread could be too tight; loosen both tensions.

Beautifully simple explanation Susan! Thank you. I've walked away from a project or two due to this. I agree about cleaning the feed dogs and tension discs. I frequently change needles, spent too many years watching my mother try to sew with what she knew were dull needles.
