Shirring is great! I looks pretty and is really useful for making dresses and skirts.

I just hand fill a bobbin with elastic thread, kind of loosely, and use regular thread on the top. Use the longest stitch you have, and be SURE to secure beginning and end of each row. After several rows of stitching, (make sure the elastic is on the wrong side of the fabric), use a steam iron holding it just off the fabric, and the elastic shrinks up... sometimes almost in half, if you have a lot of rows.
