After years of teaching sewing, I have discovered most students don't understand the back of the envelop "size charts". Take a Simplicity pattern, for example, and notice there are TWO measurement charts: BODY measurements (at the top) and FINISHED GARMENT measurement (at the bottom). One needs to learn to use the bottom FINISHED measurement chart to see how FIT will be when done. Reference http://voguepatterns.mccall.com/ease-chart-pages-347.php to see what I am meaning. The final fit of a garment has lots to do with how "fitting" (tight or loose) you want your item to be when done sewing.
