Sew, What's New?

Curating sewing and quilting talent, techniques, and tutorials, since 1997.

"Ever since I can remember, my mother has been trying to get me to sew. But I never wanted any of it.

She knows all the tricks. She'd lure me downstairs to her sewing room with something else, then change the subject to which fabric would work best in her quilt. Sometimes she would offer me inducements, which I'm guessing she figured would work since it proved so effective on the dog.

I usually stumbled through it by pointing at a few fabrics at random, saying "looks nice" a few times and replying "stuff" to any question that the word could be seen as a reasonable answer.

So imagine her surprise when I showed up with my Christmas wish list late last year and smack-dab in the middle of it was fabric and some help sewing a shirt"    .... read on!

Very cute! My story has actually been the opposite, picked up sewing in High School and am now teaching my mom stuff! She's my little helper.

I still continually beat the sewing gene into my 16yr. old. I started at 4 and am past my 1/2 cent. She was forced into it at 6. Knows the rules and can make a fabulous garment. Am waiting on the love to surface. lol.

Ah...sounds familiar but substitute me as the mom and my girls as not interested.  (Well, in all fairness, one of my four girls has some interest in sewing...a tiny amount mind you).

I think it would be fun to have the girls whipping up projects and excited to walk inside a fabric store with me. NO LUCK thus far but at least that story gives me hope for the future and my hubby is saving a ton on not having five of us sewing. Hmmm...I'll have to tell him that too when I put my request in for the serger. hee hee

So nice to hear u took the plunge after all that momly urging. My mother taught me to sew as well and it is a treasured memory for me. Keep on sewing and taking advantage of your mom's expertise, its priceless.

I like this story a lot.  I wish I had paid more attention to my mom's craftiness.  She didn't sew per 'se, but she was always doing some sort of craft.

This is an awesome story! As a mother of two daughters, both know how to sew and don't, I, too, would be in heaven if they presented me with a Christmas gift like this. I love to share my love of sewing.
